Assault Rifles?

Last night, I was watching CNN and saw Mike Huckabee's unfortunate comment about someone aiming a gun at Barack Obama.

That comment was about the most idiotic thing someone could say. What better proof is out there that we ought to curb the availability of guns than jokes about political assassinations by guns.

On to my real point...

Huckabee criticized Obama for "retreating" on a statement he once made about not outlawing guns. Recently, Obama stated that he would be in favor of a ban on assault rifles. This was evidence for Huckabee that Obama was a liar!

How has it happened that people in this country think that the right to purchase and possess assault rifles is essential to liberty? What is an assault rifle good for?

I'm not a fan of hunting, but if someone wants to have a rifle and go hunting, I'm not heartbroken over it. Why does someone wants to go hunting with an assault rifle?

Let's go over this:

Hunting rifles are for hunting deer
Assault rifles are for assaulting people.

Healthcare in this nation is expensive and getting more expensive. Tax burdens are unfairly distributed. We let mortgage brokers lie on applications and slaughter the economy. Nevertheless, Huckabee cares about preserving our right to own assault rifles and it sells to the NRA crowd like Dora to 2 year olds.

This seems like the appropriate place to start when talking about gun control. The right to bear arms is constitutionally protected... and important: given the direction of society, there might come a point in the not too distant future when it will become important to know how to hunt for food. All that being said, though, there are some weapons out there that it just doesn't make sense for people to own. I think the fear of gun owners, though, is that when you cede power to the government to control such matters where will the restrictions stop.

I own several rifles. One is a high power 30-06 pump action rifle with a bottom load magazine and variable power scope for deer hunting in Pennsylvania. One is a .22 caliber tubular magazine bolt action rifle for plinking and small varmint hunting. Another is an AR 15 style semi-automatic .223 caliber bottom loading magazine rifle. I use it for National Match style competition shooting with open sights. All of the anti-gun folks mistakenly call this rifle an assault rifle because of its appearance. This gun is no more dangerous than my hunting rifle. In fact the hunting rifle is about four times more powerful and much more accurate due to the telescope.

The Second Amendment states that the right to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. Those are pretty powerful words. Therefore there must be a compelling and logical reason to infringe on the choices of arms and ammunition available to U.S. citizens. It seems there was a compelling reason during the height of the prohibition gangster era in Chicago to ban fully automatic arms. After all criminals were using them and not God fearing, law abiding, tax paying citizens. Assault rifles are fully automatic rifles that have been outlawed to ordinary citizens for many years. Only the police and military can possess them.

The Sullivan Act in New York City was enacted by a corrupt Tammany Hall politician who wanted to prevent the political opposition from having guns. Mr. Sullivan only wanted to have his gang have guns. Mr. Sullivan was finally put in jail but his law is still used by the New York City power structure to limit the availability of guns to only the well connected. A similar situation exists in Chicago where only the well connected are “deputized” and can carry guns. So it seems that infringement of the right to keep and bear arms is driven less by public safety than it is by political power.

With our incarceration rate past 1% and heading towards 2%, with our zip code limited non-competitive defective urban school systems creating more poverty and crime, and with the various Hispanic gangs increasing in power, my definition of infringement includes any law or policy that prevents me from using any kind of gun and ammunition for recreation or defense.

I am one of over six million law-abiding citizens in this country who are licensed to carry a concealed handgun. Keep in mind that there are only about one million sworn and un-sworn peace officers in this country. There was no officer present when I was approached by a man who cut diagonally across a major intersection to intercept me at a dark narrow sidewalk between parked cars and corner building.

Senator Obama is on the record for favoring the banning of semi-automatic rifles and concealed carry. He is also on record for saying the there is plenty of elbow room regarding the Second Amendment beyond the total handgun ban in Chicago. He and other liberal Democrats just don’t get it.

They treat poverty as a conflict between the haves and the have nots. Only the redistribution of wealth can minimize poverty. What morons. Poverty is the inability to create sufficient value for yourself and for others. Everything else is a symptom of this inability. The lack of education and racist culture in our urban centers is what drives crime. Life seems to be a zero sum game when you are inadequately educated to create value and your racist culture denigrates educational achievement and personal accountability.
